Mother, my Martyr was written by Urbi Khan as a tribute to her mother. Khan said that this poem was inspired by her own desire to explore what it means to be the daughter of a woman of colour who was raised in a different culture and generation. She hopes to eradicate the preconceived notion most millenial women of colour have that their mothers and grandmothers are “ignorant” or “not with the times.” (Publication: WOCE.)
